Japanese nightlife comes to Eastbourne on Saturday evening, as the Towner Gallery is transformed into a living recreation of the Tokyo streets.

Club Tokyo will fill every level of the gallery with music, film, art and cuisine, inspired by the Towner’s current exhibition of lifelike wooden sculptures by Japanese artist Tomoaki Suzuki.

J-pop karaoke sessions will be backed by a live band, while traditional Japanese musicians create more tranquil sounds in a separate chill-out space. Other live music appears in a unique minature ‘gig-in-a-box’, offering a one-on-one listening experience between the performer and listener.

The experience is completed by neon projections simulating Tokyo’s street atmosphere, Japanese food and drink tasting, and more music from the Club Tokyo DJs.

A fashion photographer will be on hand to document visitors who take advantage of Club Tokyo’s optional dress-code: Japanese Street, Harajuku or Manga styles.

Club Tokyo is promoters Melting Vinyl’s second Towner takeover, following last October’s successful Studio 54 event at which Brighton electronic pop group Kovak joined London’s Hatcham Social and DJ LA Knight for a recreation of New York’s disco heyday inspired by the Towner’s groundbreaking Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition.

Club Tokyo tickets cost £8, doors 8.30pm, Saturday, March 5.

The Towner’s Tomoaki Suzuki exhibition – the artist’s first solo show in the UK – concludes on Sunday, March 6. Opening hours 10am – 5pm, admission free.
