Rain, rain, go away

Some eclectic electric highlights for the weekend

Goodness me, October already, and winter looks like it’s come early! If it actually stops raining at any point this weekend, here are East’s quick picks for the weekend. Yes, it’s a music-heavy selection, but we want to be under cover in the dry, not out on the fields and beaches...

BEATABET present PHASE 6, HECTOR’S HOUSE, BRIGHTON. Fri 1. Free

Brighton’s Beatabet collective bring live music, visual art and DJs to Hector’s tonight, with a mix of electronics, improvisation and indie melodicism from Jacked In The Box, Seadog, the Spirit Of Gravity Quartet and Miss Pain frontwoman Sarah Payne. It’s free. They’re very good. We like it.

THE ELECTRIC BLOWHOLE, THE PIG IN PARADISE, HASTINGS. Sat 2. £tbc

An occasional night of live music, art, dubious projections and drink problems, taking over the back room of The Pig. Installment #5 features an all-new set from noisemongers P For Persia, gentle pop oddness from A Child Rasputin, and a loop set from the Broken Robot Orchestra. Nominal admission charge TBC, but really not much.

EASTBOURNE FESTIVAL LIVE: ANDY C, THE WINTER GARDEN, EASTBOURNE. Sat 2. £12

It’s rare that the major club event of the weekend happens in Eastbourne, but here’s 2010’s second Eastbourne Festival Live event, and it’s a big ‘un. Andy C, DJ Hype, Nero, Xample and Lomax headline the drum & bass heavy main stage in the Winter Garden's main Floral Hall, with dubstep, liquid and electro sounds in the Gold Room. Tickets are getting scarce!

DARREN EMERSON, COALITION, BRIGHTON. Sat 2. £8

Inevitably, Brighton’s still able to come up trumps with a winning club night for the weekend. This Saturday, Coalition welcomes former Underworld member Darren Emerson, who’s left his famous Underwater Records behind and tonight launches his new label Detone. It’s £6 in advance, £8 on the door, but going up higher after 1am if you’ve been dragging your heels.

PVT, AUDIO, BRIGHTON. Sun 3. £8

Finally, a bit more live electronica (can you spot the theme this weekend? Honestly, we had a load of other events selected, but they’d all been cancelled...) from Warp act PVT. Formerly known as Pivot, the Sydney, Australia band evidently decided they needed a less catchy name to be taken seriously overseas. Or something. Still, Audio's safely undercover. Unless Brighton floods. Oh dear.
