Telling tales at Small Wonder

The Small Wonder short story festival returns to Charleston later this month, for a weekend of readings and events from some of the world’s favourite writers.

Charleston will also host an exhibition of book illustrations by artist Quentin Bell, and East readers are exclusively invited to the Private View on September 10.

Small Wonder festival runs from September 23 – 26 at Charleston Farmhouse in Firle, near Lewes. Charleston was the country home of the Bloomsbury group, with writers including Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and Maynard Keynes amongst the many artists who visited or lived there.

A diverse spread of readers at this year’s Small Wonder includes novelist A.S. Byatt, actor Kerry Fox and comedian Alexei Sayle, plus many more famous authors and critics.

Other entertainment includes ping pong tournaments, film screenings, children’s workshops, and live music from Brighton’s Willkommen Collective.

Charleston's Quentin Bell exhibition features beautifully illustrated small books, created by Bell for his close family during the 1950s and 60s. Bell was a potter, artist, lecturer in fine art and art history professor, and this exhibition, celebrating the centenary of his birth, includes many fantastica and unseen children's books.

Bell's daughters Virginia Nicholson and Cressida Bell will attend the Private View on this Friday (September 10), 6.30 - 8.30pm. RSVP to h.wood@charleston.org.uk

Quentin Bell - Illustrator runs from September 11 - October 31.

See www.charleston.org for more details on Charleston and the Small Wonder festival, including full programme and ticket details.
