Coastal Currents Festival continues to impress and surprise this week as Back Door Gallery make a welcome return. Fresh from their dramatic contribution to the festival launch, Back Door Gallery will present a weekend of performance from artist duo Smalls-Murray.
Roaming the old town from a base amongst the Seafood and Wine Festival at Rock-a-Nore car park, Smalls-Murray’s ‘Petty Tache’ promises to raise an eyebrow and induce a smile. The diminutive Smalls stated this week that he was “looking forward to a little silliness by the seaside”; the duo also revealed that their performance would once again involve the ever-willing people of Hastings.
Smalls-Murray will be in town 11am-4pm both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th September, so head down to Rock-a-Nore and place your order at ‘Petty Tache’ to become part of fun at Coastal Currents Festival.

Smalls-Murray have been involved in a wide range of carefully choreographed improvisations, obstructions, acts of good will, and death defying monologues since 2006. The performance duo provide a constant stream of challenges, from the most earnest of self-less endeavours, to the most manipulative of deceptions, blurring the boundaries between truth, art and theatre.
BACK DOOR GALLERY is an artist-run initiative formed to promote the work of emerging and early career artists. The gallery has represented the Duo since 2007 and returns to Coastal Currents after presenting 'Lolly' an exhibition by artist Rene Duboir at coastal currents 2009. The gallery is currently running an open submission project called L'Oeuf which provides a rare opportunity for artists to work outside the normal restraints, and contribute to a progressive publication that celebrates the initial spark at the centre of all things creative.
Smalls-Murray are also the enigmatic and passionate patrons and owners of 'The Pocillum' one of the largest egg cup collections in Europe. Running events up and down the country displaying a selection of their vast poultry bi-product container archive, recently forming part of the collectors corner at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, they encourage the general public to take in the historic, nutritious and bizarre world of egg cups. The public are encouraged to become part of the ever growing exhibiting collection by bringing egg cups to donate to the permanent collection. Smalls-Murray have set in stone requirements for any container that is to make the archive; one it must be an intact egg cup. Two, all cups no longer contain egg in any form, and three, if bought for the purpose of donating it can cost no greater than one pound sterling.
