Hundredth competitor in his hundredth marathon

If running 26 miles seems like a bit of a marathon to you, think about Nigel Webb. When he runs in the Beachy Head marathon this Saturday, October 25, he will be competing in his hundredth marathon and will be wearing competitor badge 100.

Nigel has completed 99 marathon courses during the past 19 years with 49 of these occurring in the last four years. His fiftieth marathon was also the Beachy Head marathon, completed in 2004. In the last four years he has covered over 1,200 miles in such locations as London, New York, Barbados, Snowdonia, Dublin and Benidorm.

Talking about his hundredth marathon Nigel says, ‘I chose this marathon because it is my all time favourite. I love the route, the scenery, the Piper, the brass band, the food stations, the Seven Sisters, the start and finish, the swim, the meal, and the overall atmosphere.’

Past champion back to reclaim crown

Four times Beachy Head marathon winner, Stuart Mills looks set to win his crown back this Saturday.

Stuart won the first four Beachy Head marathons but hasn’t won for two years. This year, with both the 2006 and 2007 champions absent from the competition, the lecturer from Brighton University is one of the front runners for this year’s title.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Cllr Steve Wallis said, ‘The Beachy Head Marathon is such a brilliant event because each and every competitor is taking on their own personal challenge. From running for the title, to the walkers taking part to raise vital funds for their chosen charities, the event is special to everyone for totally different reasons. The event promises to be action-packed this weekend and I want to encourage spectators to come along and cheer the competitors on!’

The Mayor will officially start the marathon at 9am outside St Bede’s School, King Edwards Parade. Come down to cheer off the competitors – including Eastmag’s own Dave Standen – then return from 11.40am to be there to cheer home those first across the line.
