Those bringing inflatables to the beach this summer now have a new safety leaflet to refer to.

This comes after lifeguards at Eastbourne beach have had a bout of bathers getting into trouble whilst using inflatables; the latest incident causing a full air-sea search operation to rescue four teenagers adrift in a dinghy.

Cllr Steve Wallis, Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Economy, Tourism and Environment, said ‘We want everyone to enjoy the sea at Eastbourne, but is worth remembering the dangers. We would advise against using inflatables in the sea, but for those who want to, we have produced a beach safety leaflet that gives advice on how to stay safe whilst having fun.’

Top tips from the leaflet include asking a lifeguard before taking an inflatable onto the water, never taking one out in strong winds, high waves or fog and attaching a line onto children’s inflatables to be held by an adult on shore.

Pick up a leaflet from EB’s Bandstand, lifeguard stations or the Seafront Office.
