Barbecue fans in a seaside resort will be toasting a few more sausages this summer following the resorts expansion of barbecue friendly beaches, organised in response to particularly high customer demand.

Much of Eastbourne seafront will now be open for barbecue use from 6pm to 11pm each evening.

Councillor Steve Wallis, Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet member for Economy, Tourism & Environment said 'The Council has taken time to chat to residents and visitors and one of the things frequently mentioned was a need for more barbecue facilities, particularly by families and young people.

The seafront is one of our greatest assets and we want to see more people using it. However safety is important too, therefore I would ask anyone considering a barbecue to read our new barbecue leaflet first.'

The leaflet includes tips for a safe barbecue as well as a few rules to ensure everyone’s enjoyment of the seafront and a reminder of the current laws in force.

Tips and rules include:

- Lighting the barbecue between 6pm and 11pm
- Not taking glass onto the beaches
- Using a metal tray
- Raising the barbecue off the pebbles to prevent stone shattering
- Limiting your party to 20 people max (More requires an event permit)

It also details which beaches can be used for barbeques and which cannot. Barbeques are not permitted on the Blue Flag beaches between the Pier and the Wish Tower (Beaches 26-39), or the beaches between Treasure Island and Fisherman’s Green (Beaches 56-63) and at Langney Point (Beaches 86-94).
