There’s only one thing better than live music and that’s free live music, unless, of course, you happened to have wandered into a Steps reunion gig in an abattoir.

Fear not though, as no such thing will happen at Brighton Live, an exciting week long free music festival celebrating the impressive volume of musical talent that is based in and around Brighton.

The annual festival, returning for its fourth year, is expanding on the huge success of previous years and organisers have promised it will be bigger and better than ever. Along with showcasing the cream of the city’s talent with around 180 acts playing in over thirty venues, there will also be mini festivals within the festival and seminars and debates offering anyone the chance to throw a few opinions around.

The event kicked off on Monday night and runs up to Saturday September 30. The opening nights highlight was, without a doubt, The Hornblower Brothers, a charmingly shambolic band reminiscent of The Coral. Other bands the should be circled, underlined and highlighted in your diary are MC Cashback at The Freebutt on Wednesday, Zex at Audio on Thursday and Kovac at Hectors on Friday.

For more information and a complete set of listings, check out the website www.brightonlive.net and remember, it’s all free.
